Have you ever been sailing smoothly through your day, ticking off tasks and handling business as usual, only to have someone drop the bombshell: “We need to talk later”? It’s like hitting an unexpected pothole on the road of productivity, and suddenly, your day takes an unexpected turn.
I just had this happen to me. I’m cleaning up some loose ends before shutting down for Christmas and one of my clients had the audacity to utter these words. And to add insult to injury, they did not have time at the moment to go into details. Needless to say, my day has now gone from light and joyful to dark and foreboding. This may be a tad dramatic but you know what I mean.
Whether it’s a colleague, a friend, or a family member, those five words have a magical ability to send a shiver down my spine. What could it be about? Did I forget something important? Is there an issue that needs addressing? The ambiguity of the impending conversation becomes a mental roadblock, disrupting my focus and hijacking my thoughts.
While I fully appreciate the importance of transparent communication, there’s something about those words that transform my routine into a suspenseful drama. It’s like a sudden plot twist, and until the actual conversation happens, my thoughts are held hostage by the looming unknown.
Of course, these unexpected disruptions often turn out to be less dramatic than my imagination would lead me to believe but until the mystery unfolds, I’ll be navigating the uncharted waters of uncertainty. A lesson the Universe keeps sending my way.
I think a dance break is in order. Time to move some energy.
