As summer winds down, I’ve been reflecting on the past few months and how I just didn’t feel the drive to continue my usual work pace. This summer, I gave myself permission to lean into a state of unproductivity—a choice that often felt at odds with the constant push to always be “doing.”
There were certainly moments when the voice of “should” made an appearance. Thoughts like, “You should be working on this,” or “You should be planning that,” crossed my mind.
I tried to get back into a productive rhythm a few times, but it felt like I was forcing it. The work I managed to do during those moments wasn’t effective; it lacked the energy and creativity I usually bring to my projects. It was as if my mind and body were telling me they needed more time to rest and recharge.
But instead of letting that drive to “do” take over, I chose to return to a place of stillness, allowing myself the freedom to simply be. This wasn’t always easy, as being unproductive can feel uncomfortable in a world that celebrates constant motion.
However, in this period of intentional laziness, something valuable emerged. By stepping away from the hustle, I created spaciousness and gained a deeper sense of clarity. With the constant noise of “doing” quieted down, I found the mental space to reconnect with my inner self.
This clarity wasn’t just about gaining new perspectives or ideas; it was about deepening my self-knowing. I was able to tune into what I truly need and desire, beyond the daily demands and distractions, giving me a clearer sense of direction and purpose moving forward.
As August came to a close, a shift occurred. It felt as though the stillness had done its work, and I was ready to step back into a rhythm of creation and productivity. This time, though, it wasn’t driven by a sense of obligation or external pressure but by a genuine readiness to engage and create.
The benefits of this period of rest are clear. It served as a reminder that productivity doesn’t always require constant action. Sometimes, it’s found in the pause, where creativity and inspiration can flourish. By embracing a lazy summer, I replenished my energy and gained a fresh perspective, which I plan to carry into the next season.
