I don’t

I sat on a health and wellness panel in the spring and I took the last chair on purpose. Sitting last meant I was able to hear the other panelist’s answers and offer agreement AND an additional point of view.

The moderator asked how each of us maintains self care when life gets chaotic.

The answers were exaclty what you would expect and made sense. Perfectly orchestrated morning rituals. Meditation before the house wakes up. Journaling, movement, protein, etc. All true and all delivered with confidence.

Then it came to me and I said, “I don’t.”

There was a pause.

I said that sometimes life takes over and the self care goes straight out the window, and when that happens I give myself grace and try again the next day.

That’s it. That’s the practice.

Women came up to me about that answer for the rest of the day. Nobody mentioned anything else I said, which tells you something about how hungry we are to hear a woman on a stage say the truth without dressing it up first.

I keep a sacred Sunday unless I don’t. I strength train three times a week unless I don’t. I love a slow morning and I have traded one for a deadline more often than I would like to admit.

That is what having a life looks like.

The women who come to the ranch are already excellent at holding a standard. Most of them have never been handed permission to miss one.

Consider this yours.

I’m curious about something. What standard are you still holding that nobody ever actually asked you to hold?
